When it comes to fireplace mantels you can't beat a reclaimed rustic beam because they look awesome on a stone fireplace. Not only that, but they can hold massive amounts of pictures and decoration items. I usually deal with furniture when it comes to refinishing and restoration, but sometimes I get calls to finish out-of-the norm pieces like an 8' reclaimed beam. This had to be the coolest project I have worked on and I had a great time finishing it. My customers also loved the finished product and couldn't wait to get it installed on their stone fireplace. I started with a very rough reclaimed beam and after some power planing, sanding, distressing, three coats of a satin lacquer (to lightly darken the natural tone of the wood) and several splinters in my hand, I had a beautiful beam ready for installing. The pictures are below. I will post a picture of the beam once it is installed as well. Give me a call for your next reclaimed/rustic project, I would love to help. Enjoy!
